Emmit and Creature; The Process

Fri May 30, 2008, 6:04 AM
I posted [link] a bunch of wip images from the Emmit and Creature painting. Maybe check it out just to see the final version at the resolution I originally painted it for. I didn't realise that DeviantArt had shrunk it until just now.

A couple of things you can see in the progression:
I switched to drawing with a tablet a few days in - this is my first real tablet painting. I abandoned the sketch-version of Emmit (the lady in red) almost immediately after I scanned it, but this was probably a mistake in the long run. I wanted to have her body language be more exaggerated, I worry that a lot of my characters are kind of static. I had a different expression in mind for her, as well. I tried a bunch of different faces and bodies, but I realised in the end that the initial sketch basically had what I needed. The other problem I had, which I kind of overlooked, is the trouble getting the characters to match one another, which isn't something I'd normally even consider (because I usually only finish drawings of lone characters). I gotta do this group thing more often.

I keep wanting to go back and do more with this picture, there's stuff (the flowers, the feet, mostly) that I'm sure I could improve, but I've spent way more time on this than I'd like to, already. It was a fun learning experience, I got to mess with characters and shapes and colours, which is basically the stuff I enjoy most about painting, but all up I spent too much time on this one, I have to figure a way to streamline this process some more.
